Douglas Park YIA Leadership 7 2006/2007

The Douglas Park Youth Inspiring Action (DP YIA) Leadership Program at Douglas Park Community Centre is a weekly introductory leadership program for grade seven students. This program introduces the five theme concepts of leadership: teamwork, goal setting, effective communication, problem solving, and public speaking. In addition, there will be introductions to giving back, networking and positive relationships. This program runs each Monday from 3:30 to 5:30 for 16 weeks. Each theme is the leadership topic focused on for one to two weeks. Generally, the first week is a facilitated interactive learning workshop and the second week is either a special guest or out trip that relates to and reinforces the basic leadership concept covered. By providing leadership training and fundraising experiences, DP YIA hopes to increase self-confidence by giving grade seven youth an opportunity to contribute to their community, and thus gain a sense of accomplishment. DP YIA has the vision that by investing in preteen youth, their community involvement and leadership abilities will continue throughout their high school careers.

Strathcona YIA Summer Mentorship 2006

The 2006 Strathcona YIA Mentorship Program at Strathcona Community Centre is a peer mentorship program in the inner city community for grade 7 students. This program takes place from July to August and will assist the grade 7 mentees in their transition to high school. Senior high school students in grades 9-12 will be selected to undergo mentorship training to act as mentors for these grade 7 students. Based on interests and gender, appropriate one-to-one mentorship pairings will be made. Over the eight weeks of the mentorship program, each mentor will meet with his or her "mentee" once a week to participate in group facilitated activities and excursions pertaining to sports, arts and culture. This mentorship program will not only support youth, but it will also provide an outlet for emerging leaders to exercise their leadership skills while developing additional mentorship and facilitation abilities. This mentorship experience will provide opportunities for grade 7 youth to engage in a variety of activities to "broaden their horizons" in the company of a peer mentor role model. These peer mentors will assist these youth in their transition to high school by not only answering questions and providing reassurance, but more importantly, these mentors will be a positive influence and future support at Britannia High School for this fall school year in September.

Strathcona YIA Leadership 2005/2006

The 2005/2006 Strathcona YIA Leadership Program at Strathcona Community Centre is weekly introductory leadership program for grade seven students. This program introduces the five theme concepts of leadership: effective communication, teamwork, problem solving, public speaking, and goal setting. This ten-week program, which happens every Friday for two hours (3:30-5:30pm), focuses on each of the five leadership themes for two weeks. The first week is a facilitated interactive workshop on the specified theme and the second week is either a special guest or out trip that relates to and reinforces the leadership concept covered. A major component that separates this leadership program from others is that there is a mentorship aspect. Each of the grade seven leadership participants is paired with a senior Britannia high school student. Many of these high school students are active community leaders and assist in guiding the development of the grade seven students' leadership skills. The high school mentors gain experience, give back, and have fun in their position as positive role models. These peer mentors assist these youth in their transition to high school by not only answering questions and providing reassurance, but more importantly, these mentors are to be a positive influence and future support at Britannia High School for this fall school year in September.
